The HART Communication Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organization providing worldwide support for application of the HART Protocol. Established in 1993, the Foundation is the technology owner and standards setting body for the HART Protocol. The Foundation manages the Protocol standards, ensures the technology is openly available for the benefit of the industry and educates users by providing vendor-neutral training and support for application of the HART Protocol.

ODVA is an international association comprised of members from the world's leading automation companies. Collectively, ODVA and its members support network technologies based on the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP). These currently include DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, CIP Safety and CIP Sync. ODVA manages the development of these open technologies, and assists manufacturers and users of CIP-based networks through tools, training and marketing activities.

In order to ensure the interoperability, longevity and upgradeability of the protocol, the DNP3 Users Group has taken ownership of the protocol and assumes responsibility for its evolution. The DNP3 Users Group Technical Committee evaluates suggested modifications or additions to the protocol and then amends the protocol description as directed by the Users Group members.

Modbus-IDA is a group of independent users and suppliers of automation devices that seeks to drive the adoption of the Modbus communicationprotocol suite and the evolution to address architectures for distributed automation systems across multiple market segments. Modbus-IDA will also provide the infrastructure to obtain and share information about the protocols, their application and certification to simplify implementation by users resulting in reduced costs.

The FDT Group is an open, independent, not-for-profit collaboration of international companies dedicated to establish an international standard with broad acceptance within the automation industry based on Field Device Tool technology.
